Abstract
In order for the elder abuse intervention to be more effective, it is necessary to approach the issue comprehensively including not only the elderly who are abused but also the abusers of the elderly. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between abusers¡¯ characters and the elder abuse.
In other words, the impact of abusers¡¯ characteristics perceived by the elderly on their physical abuse,
lingual and emotional abuse, financial abuse and neglect were examined. For the study, data were collected from 434 abused elderly across the nation. The result of the analysis revealed that the abuse increased as an abuser is a spouse, had experience of witnessing abuse in the past, does not have a good relationship with the abusee, when the elderly are not living alone and when they are female. In addition, the elderly were more likely to have lingual and emotional abuse when an abuser has better economic status, when he/she has an alcohol issue, when the relationship with the abusee is not good, and when the elderly are not living alone and when they are female. On the other hand, it was more likely for an abuser to abuse the elderly financially when he/she did not have a spouse and had experience of being abused. Lastly, it
was more likely for an abuser to neglect when he/she is a child of the elderly, when the relationship is not good, when the economic situation of the elderly is worse, when they are highly dependent and when the realizations of filial responsibility is higher. On the basis of these results, implications for policy and practice are suggested.
